In the ceremony held at the beautiful Hilton Sorrento Palace Mrs. Sophia Loren received the Golden Key of the city of Sorrento as an Honorary Citizen. The city of Sorrento had gained world recognition in 1955 as it served the backdrop for the film “Pane amore e fantasia,” directed by Mr. Dino Risi.
In this world-renowned film, Mrs. Sophia Loren was a star opposite to the late Vittorio De Sica. After the voting procedure by the Sorrento Municipality Councilors, the symbolic key of the city, that represented the masterpiece of gold craftsmanship, was given to Mrs. Loren by Sorrento Mayor Marco Fiorentino and by the president of the Sorrento Foundation, Mr. Gianluca Aponte.
Mrs. Loren is now 74 years old, she is the most popular Italian film actress in her times. She has received several awards throughout her career, most lately the Academy Honorary Award in 1991 for her offerings to world of cinema when she was declared "one of the world cinema's treasures." In 1995, she received the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award.
